Shell-fish production is an important activity on Charentais coastline in western France, most notably in the area of Marennes-Oléron. This small-scale "artisanale" activity employs many women who play a considerable role both in the labour force and management of the family businesses without, however, benefitting from any recognised professional status. Aware of this fact, the women involved in oyster production have formed an Association (APCBMO) through which they have endeavoured to diversify their activities by involving themselves in coastal rural tourism.
